Instagram Tests Moving the DM Button to a More Prominent Location

Instagram is experimenting with a layout change that could impact how users interact with its direct messaging (DM) feature.

Instagram is experimenting with a layout change that could impact how users interact with its direct messaging (DM) feature. The proposed update involves moving the DM button to the front and center of the app’s user interface, placing it directly on the main navigation bar, just below the Stories section.

This adjustment aims to make DMs more accessible, reflecting the growing importance of private messaging for user engagement on the platform. Instagram has reported increased messaging activity as a result of its “broadcast channels” feature, which allows users to engage in large-group, one-way conversations.

For public safety professionals—like social media managers or public information officers in law enforcement or fire services—this shift could highlight the role of Instagram as a communication tool for connecting with citizens. Faster access to DMs may enable more efficient responses to inquiries, incoming tips, or reports from the public.

While it’s not yet confirmed if the update will roll out widely, testing indicates Instagram’s focus on prioritizing private discussions alongside public posts. For public safety teams looking to enhance their responsiveness and accessibility through social media channels, keeping an eye on these changes could be a strategy worth considering.
